Each September, fashion-lovers around the world wait for it with bated breath: New York Fashion Week. The highly anticipated event wrapped up a little over a week ago, flooding the catwalks (and my wardrobe wish lists) with fresh pieces that were all at once chic, eye-catching, and utterly divine. But, as any good fashionista knows, NYFW is about much more than the looks on the runways — it’s about the ones on the sidewalks outside the shows, too, where key fashion influencers show off their coveted street style. Here are just a handful of the top trends spotted on both the runways and sidewalks at New York Fashion Week — get ready to be inspired.
Floral Frocks
It might be September, but summer’s warmth is still lingering in most parts of the country, NYC included. So it’s not shocking that dresses remain a go-to item in our wardrobes. Take Grazia Magazine’s word for it when they say that floral dresses have been surprisingly omnipresent — even (or perhaps especially) on the sidewalks of New York Fashion Week. Whether they’re boho-inspired with flowing sleeves or a maxi cut skimming the ankle, these feminine floral dresses aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Wear yours into the winter by pairing it with a chunky heel or ankle bootie and some luxe accessories.
Matching Separates
Once upon a time (some would say it was the ’80s), pantsuits were dowdy, ill-fitting, and exclusively for the office. Not anymore. As the New York Fashion Week sidewalks and runways proved, the power suit is not what it used to be — and that’s a good thing. Gone are the days of boxy cuts and ungainly shoulder pads, replaced instead by sleek silhouettes and unexpected patterns. To get ready to rock the trend read what Glamour has to say about the new pantsuit — namely, that you’re definitely going to want to get behind it (and in it) this fall.
Graphic Tees
Since NYFW has kicked off the fashion festivities, there has been no shortage of warm-weather friendly ensembles swarming the sidewalks, including the cool-girl graphic tee. Whether it’s Concert merch, vintage relic, or otherwise, this street style trend was frequently seen paired with patterned or textured skirts or pants, making it dressy enough for the front row during the shows while retaining its inherent edge. For inspiration, try perusing Lyst’s assortment of tops where you’ll find a wide range of graphic tees as well as a variety of ways to style the trend no matter where you’re headed, be it drinks with the girls, an afternoon or errand-running, or, well, a fashion show.
Ruffles and Pleats
If there’s one thing the latest trends aren’t short on, it’s uber-feminine details. Case in point: ruffles and pleats are here to stay, at least until next spring. Check out W Magazine’s post on two of NYFW’s most ladylike accents for a full rundown on the ruffles and pleats that have graced the runways thus far, then try out the trend for yourself. Take a note from Akris’ Fashion Week lineup by adding an extra dose of femininity to your wardrobe with a whimsical silk pleated piece or follow Brock’s lead with full-on ruffles adorning structured, vintage-inspired silhouettes.
