Last night’s theme for the most talked about event of the year, aside from the Oscar’s of course, is Charles James: Beyond Fashion. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an annual event that everyone who is anyone attends and pulls out all the fashion stops to do it. This year’s theme honors Charles James, a twentieth-century designer, who is known as “America’s first Couturier”. The exhibition, which debuts on May 8th, will take a look into his sculptured work which influenced his architectural approach to fashion design and ballgowns. Very exciting!
Now let’s get into how these celebrities translated his work into their looks of the night…
First, we have to highlight my top favorites:
Sarah Jessica Parker STUNNED in an Oscar de la Renta dress. I mean not only is this an entrance per her norm, but she truly looks like the bell of the ball. Very Carrie-esq I might add. Did you peep Oscar’s signature on the train of the gown? Gorgeous!
Per my norm, Rihanna can do no wrong to me. She looks exceptional in this Stella McCartney ensemble; a vision in white. I love how simple yet fitting this piece is on her. The back is also very stunning. Love this on her.
Hailee Steinfeld looks radiant in this Prabal Gurung dress. Simply beautiful!
Lala is always a stunner on the red carpet, but she looks like a sexy vision of royalty in this dress. So fly!
Now we continue with the massive red carpet highlights for your viewing pleasure:
Anna Kendrick looks stunning. Very chic!
I really love this Calvin Klein ensemble on Anne Hathaway
I love seeing Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds together. She looks stunning and they always look so happy.
I’m secretly obsessed with Cara Delevingne and she looks chic and bad ass in this Stella McCartney ensemble. I’m not mad at this.
I am happy to see Charlize Theron and Sean Penn together. She looks beautiful as always on the red carpet.
Dita Von Teese can wear the hell out of a gown dont you think? Fierce!
I have to say that I love seeing Emma Stone in something flirty and pink like this Thakoon dress. The amazing fashionista really can do no wrong, but this is a softer side to her strong and chic looks.
Emmy looks beautiful in Carolina Herrera although I would have went for a different lip color.
Love how Erykah Badu rocks to the beat of her own drum. It’s nice seeing her on a carpet.
Out of all the looks, this one disappointed me the most. I expected so much more from Gabrielle Union in this Prada ensemble. I’m really confused on why this was her pick for the night. Sigh! Thoughts?
Can I just say I’m living for Janelle Monae’s beautiful cloak and shoes. Her ensemble is typical Janelle though. Nothing more or less on her end.
The king and queen of Hip Hop and R&B look like kings and queens do in their stunning Givenchy Haute Couture looks. What more can we say?
I really dislike Katie Holmes, Marchesa dress. This was another disappointment for me. I love the brand and I like her, but together this did not work for me and that hair. I really feel like her and Gabrielle are going through something. That is a personal opinion though.
Moving along….
I hate this dress on Lea Michele. I think the middle just throws me off. Not a fan of this.
I’m really lost on what to say about Lena Dunham’s Giambattista Haute Couture gown. It doesn’t do anything for her. I would have liked to see her in something more spectacular at the Met Gala.
Liu Wen looks striking in this Zac Posen gown. It fits her to perfection. Yes!
I don’t understand this look on Naomi Campbell….
Love the dress, but hate the shoe choice. I feel they are doing WAY too much, however, Rita Ora looks great as usual in Donna Karan Atelier.
Solange is giving me modern day Old Hollywood in this 3.1 Phillip Lim gown I love the color on her.

There were some good and some bad, but all in the name of fashion. Who were your favorites?
