For me, a denim button up is an essential item to have in your closet. I own several denim shirts and they are always go-to pieces for a variety of looks. Dressed up or down they are a great second or third piece to play around with. The issue that I find some people have is that they are not sure how to wear it outside of pairing it with denim or black jeans, slacks, shorts or a simple cotton pencil skirt. All of those are great ways to utilize a denim shirt, I have done all of them, however; there are so many ways you can explore wearing a denim top. In order to do more you have to know your options which is where this guide comes in.
Here are three ways to make your denim shirt work for you…
1st Look – Casual & Chic: New Look Blue Denim Shirt, ASOS Leather Quilted Clutch Bag with Gold Bars, New Look Gold Open Cross Pearl Earrings, Topshop Border Print Woven Joggers, Giuseppe Zanotti 100MM Python Printed Leather Sandals
This casual and chic look is perfect for brunch with friends, a casual dinner or a trendy day event. Printed joggers or harem pants are always a fun way to enhance any look and I particularly love these joggers from Topshop because the print is bright and bold. Pair a bottom piece like this, with a denim button up (sleeves rolled up or unrolled your choice), with some fun earrings, a clutch and some simple yet attention getting mules or sandals and your in business. In this case, the denim top is used as a top, but you could easily use it as a third layering piece by throwing on a tank top or bralet under it and tie it at the waist for a sexy effect.
2nd Look – Chic & Street: New Look Blue Denim Shirt, Topshop Cut Out Cuff, New Look Tan Leather-Look Metal Corner Tote Bag, Tibi Corset-Back Maxi Dress, J.Crew Metal Link Ankle-Strap Sandals
When we think of chic and street this look is definitely it. Maxi dresses will always be must-have options for spring/summer and we all know wearing a simple one-piece like a beautiful printed maxi dress is an easy win. However, if you want to take it one step further, layering a maxi dress with a third piece such as a denim button up will give the look an added touch. For this look, we have a yellow printed dress, denim button up that you could wear with the sleeves rolled up for that boyfriend shirt effect, tie it at the waist or leave it straight down and unbuttoned, paired with a cuff bracelet, chic flats for walking and a great tote.
3rd Look – City Chic: New Look Blue Denim Shirt, New Look Gold Hammered Stick Stretch Cuff Bracelet, Dorothy Perkins Black Striped Clutch Bag, New Look Gold Oval Link Chain Necklace, Topshop Lace Bralet, Boohoo Penny Asymmetric Wrap Skirt, Alexander Wang Antonio Stingray Embossed Leather Heels
Our third look oozes city chicness at its finest. This look is perfect for dinner with friends, date night or a summer evening event. The Boohoo asymmetric wrap skirt is sexy, chic and bright. Pair this skirt with a bralet (in this case I picked white to tie the shoes in), some chic and flirty sandals, some stand out accessories and use the denim button up as a layering piece. Again, it could be tied at the waist, tucked in with the top buttons left open or the shirt could be left out and entirely unbuttoned. The important thing to remember is that a denim button up can be treated as a neutral which gives you a variety of ways to incorporate it into any look.
